There is a service called “日帰り入浴（ひがえりにゅうよく, higaeri nyuyoku)” that allows visitors to enjoy beautiful hot spring facilities without having to stay overnight at an onsen ryokan or hotel.
This service is usually available for a few hours starting around noon, and costs only a few thousand yen.
Today I went to a hot spring facility on the top floor of a hotel with a beautiful lake view from the window. I brought my own towel, so I was able to bathe for 1,000 yen.
